The „I Know What I Breathe” project
In 2008, the project called I know What I Breathe was completed at Sázavská Elementary School in Prague 2; the project was implemented by Pražské Matky in cooperation with the Health Institute in Kolín and with the support of the City of Prague. The aim of the project was to acquaint pupils both theoretically and in practice with the issue of polluted air in Prague, particularly in connection to traffic behavior.
Within the project, children attended several lectures on the impact of traffic on the air and impact of polluted air to human health. The children also visited the Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute, where they learnt about the real measuring process, its results and usage, and also about a mobile measuring unit equipped with an automatic monitoring system. The practical part of the project consisted of a measuring device placed within the school premises and measurement of concentration of particles of flying dust PM10. Within four two-week measuring campaigns the pupils were changing the dust filters daily and kept records on operation of the device in an operation log. The results of the measuring were processed by laboratories of the Health Institute in Kolín.
In the beginning of November 2008, the final press conference took place. The children presented the course and results of the project to their schoolmates, representatives of the public administration and media. Pražské Matky circulated within the Prague elementary schools the educational brochure „I Know What I Breathe” or „What You Want To Know About Air” created during the project by workers of the Health Institute.
